A creative campaign that brought American college students to Mississippi in 1964, Freedom Summer deployed performative strategies like nonviolent passive resistance and singing. This NEH Digital Humanities ARIS project is centered upon Freedom Summer’s training sessions in Oxford, Ohio, using archival photos, letters, music and film footage participants role play as volunteers in 1964. This project explores issues around the gamification of serious historical subject matter and the potential for ARIS in balancing the personal and social to inspire civic dialogue and community engagement.
