We explored integrating Twitter into ARIS, and developed a game relying upon the use of Twitter for communication between multiple groups of users at different physical locations. To test the suitability of Twitter for providing improved collaboration, the game we created was play-tested by 46 volunteers. This system was analyzed from the player point of view by means of a mixed-method approach: a case study analysis with data collected via pre- and post-questionnaires, a focus group, and field observations. Through this research we found Twitter to be an effective vehicle for in-game collaboration but only during best-case usage scenarios. In terms of the effectiveness of collaboration within our game, the results of our study point to a positive impact of the game mechanics, promoting and encouraging user collaboration, cohesion, and communication between users in different physical locations.
